It’s a lot of trust to put in one relatively small company who have become a valuable target.Īt least with offline storage you have control. And yes, the vaults are encrypted but all it takes is for someone to inject some code in to the website and they can pop your vault right open. They will have a massive store of password vaults on their cloud provider that will create an incredibly attractive target for hackers. Not because of the pricing but because of the move to a cloud storage solution. I don’t necessarily have an issue with subscriptions but I do with 1Password moving to that model. I'll probably pay more money in the long run, but I prefer this way. It gives me flexibility and fully updated software I don't pay upgrade pricing for. A developer could lose out on income immediately, rather than coasting on the money they have made. If they start to get lazy, you can unsubscribe instantly, and so can everyone else you convince to do the same, with the entire internet as your audience. With subscription, they lose leverage against you too. There's always the upgrade you can sell with nice new features, but the developer has your money for your current version. If you're a developer who already has all the money people have paid for your product up front, you are less likely to maintain it along the way because you have no incentive to. So I can appreciate that maybe this news isn't very comforting, but it does look like the stand-alone vaults will remain at least through the next iteration - though I think corporate needs will ensure a stand-alone vault. And it did take DAYS of arguing to finally get this concession. I made it clear to AgileBits I simply will not go subscription on critical security software. That said, I sympathize with your uncertainty. I just think they're going to bury the option and pretty much grandfather those of us already on a stand-alone plan. The reason for the standalone is because there are customers who simply cannot use the 1Password cloud service (whether it is corporate policy or personal reasons). Now, the blog waxes poetic about the subscription, but at the bottom there is a commitment to the standalone for both the existing and forthcoming versions of 1Password. If an application needs access to your keychain after that limit has expired, you’ll be prompted for your login keychain password. If you choose the first option and configure it to read something like 5 minutes, your keychain will lock if it hasn’t been accessed in the last five minutes. The sheet that appears shows two options: 'Lock After X Minutes of Inactivity' and 'Lock When Sleeping'. To do that, launch Keychain Access, select your login keychain, and choose Edit > Change Settings for Keychain “login”. You can add a level of security that auto-locks your keychain. I was going to type instructions but found these,īy default, once you’ve logged in, your keychain will be unlocked, which isn’t terribly secure if others can access your Mac when you’re not around.
